- Abstract
The article discusses the Valley Campaign of the U.S. Civil War and the operations of the Valley commissary of subsistence. The author utilizes the papers of commissary officer Major Wells J. Hawk to explore the procurement, transportation, and issuance of provisions such as bacon, beef, and flour to soldiers under the command of Confederate general Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. Other topics include captured supplies, the inadequacy of transportation, and the last words of Jackson.
