- Authors
PLAINEMAISON, JACQUES
- Abstract
The article discusses two versions of the the first of the "Lettres à Ibis" composed by Jean Genet between 1933 and 1953 and addressed to Andrée Pragane, also known as Andrée Plainemaison. The letters, which are included in the text, critique French explorer Michel Vieuchange's record of his expedition to the ghost city of Smara, Morocco in "Chez les dissidents du Sud et du Rio de Oro. Smara. Carnets de route de Michel Vieuchange." Topics mentioned include an analysis of Genet's literary style, Genet's idealized view of Vieuchange as an artist, and a comparison with other travel writings, such as Arthur Rimbaud's "Le Bateau Ivre."
