- Abstract
The article offers information on the history of the maritime piracy and the legal status and significance of piracy statutes to restrict the crime of piracy in the U.S. It discusses the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of United States v. Smith in which the court stated that piracy is robbery under international law. Topics also discussed include the 1958 Geneva Convention on the High Seas (Geneva Convention) and 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
