- Title
Reynolds and the double-entendre.
- Authors
Simon, Robin
- Abstract
The article discusses the sexual double-entendre or double-meanings in the portraits painted by Joshua Reynolds for the members of the Society of Dilettanti. Reynolds himself was a member of the society and the proposed portraits by Reynolds revealed the similar thoughts among Reynolds, the other members of the Dilettanti and John Frederick Sackville, the 3rd Duke of Dorset, England. It relates that even the gardens and estates of the members of the Dilettanti are filled with sexual double meanings. Information is presented on the sexual double-meanings in the pair of portraits painted by Reynolds for the Duke of Dorset.
