"So Truly Afflicting and Distressing to Me His Sorrowing Mother": Expressions of Maternal Grief in Eighteenth-Century Philadelphia.
- Authors
McMahon, Lucia
- Abstract
The article presents a case study of the maternal grief of 18th century mother Lowry Wister during her son, William Wister's, smallpox illness and his death in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Particular focus is given to Lowry Wister's emotional experience of grief and the cultural conventions of resignation. The author contends that impact of Lowry Wister's expression of grief helped to bring forth sentimental expressions of maternal love and loss in the U.S.
