- Authors
Mahieux, Viviane
- Abstract
The article discusses the author's opinions on the cultural effect of the death of writer and political activist Carlos Monsiváis on Mexico's 2010 bicentennial anniversary celebration of the country's independence form Spain. The originality of Monsiváis' work, defined by his variety of themes, ability to appeal to and provoke the public, and draw affected reactions from his readers, is evaluated. The author asserts that these qualities helped to create a collective identity for the Mexican public, and describes the ceremony of mourning Monsiváis' death as a representation of the relationship between intellectual character and public power.
