- Title
"Almost, at Times, the Fool'': Abimelekh and Genesis 20.
- Authors
Novick, Tzvi
- Abstract
Abimelekh of Genesis 20 is typically read as simply a more righteous version of Pharaoh of Genesis 12. The current essay argues that Abimelekh is essentially a comic figure, as ridiculous as he is righteous. This understanding enables us to appreciate the role of Genesis 20 in the Abraham narrative. Abimelekh, acting as a foil for Abraham, parodically imitates the patriarch's heroic gestures of righteousness and piety.
