- Abstract
Introduction and Objectives: Orofacial injuries are related to the oral and facial parts of the human body, which lead to tooth fractures, dental avulsions, dental luxation due to blow under the jaw, jaw fractures, and laceration of the gums, tongue, lips, and cheeks. Contact sports like taekwondo and judo can lead to orofacial injuries. Taekwondo athletes are three times more at risk of orofacial injuries than noncontact sports athletes, with prevalence varying from 20% to 34.2%. Numerous studies have specifically mentioned the risk of dental and facial injuries in judo too. This study will determine the prevalence of dental trauma in contact sports like taekwondo and judo athletes in the southern part of Gujarat, and no such study has been conducted before. Objectives: The objective is to assess the prevalence of traumatic dental injuries in athletes of Taekwondo and Judo in South Gujarat. Methodology: The present study is a cross-sectional study conducted in 4 zones of south Gujarat. All the children aged between 6 and 18 years who registered for taekwondo and judo were screened. Children were asked about demographic data, history of trauma, treatment undertaken after trauma, and knowledge of preventive measures through a questionnaire that included 18 questions. Predisposing risk factors were also assessed. Results: It is an ongoing study, and results are awaited.
