Dementia as an existential threat: the importance of self-esteem, social connectedness and meaning in life.
- Authors
CHESTON, RICHARD; CHRISTOPHER, GARY; ISMAIL, SANDA
- Abstract
The authors discuss the three important factors that can help older people manage the threats of dementia, namely self-esteem, social connectedness and meaning in life. They suggest that one can understand the psychological impacts of dementia by understanding the way in which it acts as an existential threat. The condition's potential psychological impacts include compromising identity, prompting social isolation and threatening the ability to find meaning and purpose in life.
