- Title
THE ROMAN 'SAINT'S PLAYS' OF LILLE.
- Authors
Knight, Alan E.
- Abstract
The article presents the author's insights on the Roman saint's plays written for the "La Procession de Lille" in Lille, Flanders. He says that the subject of Roman history plays like the biblical and saint's lives is to provide examples of virtuous behaviour they emulate and the viscious behaviour they should avoid. It mentions that "Le juge d'Athènes," based on the anecdote of Valerius Maximus presents an example that corruption should be avoided. The remaining three plays present heroism and courage, the "Le tourment inhumain d'Actilius Regulus" for martyrdom, "Mucius Scaevola" for heroism, and "La Captivité d'Orgia" for chastity.
