- Abstract
It's winter again, and once again, teachers must re-energize! Whereas both fall and spring are whirlwinds, winter can truly be a slog. For many of us, it's dark when we leave for work and dark when we head for home. Also, for many--if not most--of us, it is also the run-up to whatever high-stakes test our schools are getting ready to take. All of these things make winter a perfect time to ignite our minds with some exciting new ideas to try. In this issue, we offer you some really juicy ones. Boerman-Cornell, Kim, and Manderino's book on using graphic novels to teach literacy in the disciplines will delight middle and high school teachers. There is quite a bit that is new and inspiring for teachers in Kindergarten through 8th grades in the updated edition of Harvey and Goudvis's book on teaching comprehension strategies. Learn about Ralph Fletcher's invitation to return, or maintain, in the curriculum the kind of personal writing that students actually enjoy. And, finally, find out how you can recapture the excitement of best practices that may have fallen by the wayside with a book by a group of literacy experts, many of whom are from Illinois! We can do this--we can drive to work in the snow, do test prep, and still fit in lessons and activities learned from this wonderful group of new books!
