An essay is presented on the history of the nuclear arms race and technological determinism related to the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). The author considers the choices of weapons by superpowers during the Cold War and similarities between U.S. and Soviet nuclear arsenals and manned spaceflight programs. The deterministic aspects of modern warfare are considered in the context of technological production.
