- Abstract
The article provides information to U.S. elementary school teachers about the use of concept cartoons, a type of formative assessment that use students' preconceptions to investigate conceptual understanding, when teaching students about the phases of the moon. It addresses efforts to have students predict the next full moon, the benefits of using a visual format with minimal text, and teaching students to make formal observations.
