- Abstract
The article presents the authors' experience on an experiment involving students to teach them the basic principles of functioning of nervous system. The authors used a motor-kinesthetic learning activity, which is a tool to teach complex concepts. They developed and tested a game for this purpose by allowing the children themselves to model the nervous system signals. The purpose of the experiment was to introduce sensory signaling, reflexes and the effects of spinal cord injury. In the first step they introduced major concepts and vocabulary related to this to conceptualize nervous system function. Then they grouped the students for convenience and started lessons by asking about messages to familiarize the students. In the experiment 3 children were selected to represent messages of a motor cortex neuron, a spinal cord motor neuron and hand muscles and placed them in a particular order. Then the authors gave instructions to them to do specific actions that are the results of the messages from the nervous system. After the experiments students were asked questions related to this. They showed the children a plastic model of a human brain and explained the effect of spinal cord injury through a game. INSET: Brain Basics.
