- Abstract
This article discusses newspaper reporting of suicide in northern England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Particular focus is given to reporting on the location of the suicide and on the social status and sex of the deceased. According to the author, newspaper reports commented on social change and created an impression of moral distance between readers and the deceased. Other topics include sympathy, poverty, and social marginality.
