- Abstract
The article discusses social aspects of state dinners held at the White House in Washington, D.C. The author reflects on the historical continuity pervading the administrations of U.S. presidents and the facilitation of international relations. Differing levels of formality and lavishness are explored in the administrations of presidents such as Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln. Other topics include displays of pomp in wartime, the role of the residence staff, and presidential personality traits.
