- Abstract
The article analyzes the architectural writings of Japanese architect Ide Kaoru, focusing on Kaoru's opinions of Japanese colonial architecture during his time in Taiwan, then part of the Japanese Empire. The author explores the ways in which the architect sought to develop an architectural style that would be influenced by the local culture of Taiwan. Kaoru's notions of regional identity and architecture and their relationship to Japanese territorial expansion and nationhood are also documented.
