- Abstract
The article features several Canadian literature. Desolation Sound and the Discovery Islands, by Anne and Laurence Yeadon-Jones is a large-format, glossy cruising guide and a good example of a book that zigzags widely from straight-ahead Canadian literature. On Island Time, by Hilary Stewart is a nice text in which to study maps and mapping, both verbal and visual. Paddling Through Time: A Kayaking Journey Through Clayoquot Sound, by Joanna Streetly is quite a literature account of a seven-day ocean kayaking trip. The Inlet: Memoir of a Modern Pioneer, by Helen Piddington includes a return home lured by the call of Haida art and a tribute to the friendship of Mavis Gallant. The book might be of more interest to the fine arts. Rolling Home: A Cross-Canada Railroad Memoir, by Tom Allen leaves the lonesome cabin for the enclosure of the parlour car from sea to sea. The mythology of primal worlds meets the mythology of the transcontinental railroad. Douglas Harper's study of the industrial transformation of U.S. dairy-farming is discussed in his book Changing Works: Visions of a Lost Agriculture. His work might interest students of Canadian rural writing, who might be probing such topics as representations of landscapes, gendered roles, or material culture.
