- Authors
Honeyman, Susan
- Abstract
The article examines the historical and geographical exploitation of hunger or gastronomic utopias in the African American environment and their appropriation into children's literature. The author cites the comic "Uncle Remus and His Tales of Brer Rabbit," by Walt Disney where Brer Rabbit was led to work for the capitalist so he will have food. Reference is made to stories of the Land of Cockaigne in Europe which have jobless characters and roofs made of food as well as the tale of "Hansel and Gretel" where the children were lured into a bread house.
