- Title
STUDYING MANAGERIAL WORK: A CRITIQUE AND A PROPOSAL.
- Authors
Willmott, Hugh
- Abstract
The article proposed the use of institutional analysis in behavioral studies on the capitalist work organization and suggests a way to deal with the dualism of "action" and "system." Four inter-related limitations in the empirical framework include a distinction between the technical/formal and the political/formal aspects of management. Research by Mintzberg (1973), Dalton (1959), Nichols and Beynon (1977), Child (1977) and Kotter (1982) is reviewed. Giddens' theory of structuration, "Living with Capitalism," and the three images of management are mentioned.
