- Abstract
The morpho-cytological examination of the urinary sediment is of particular importance, allowing the identification of numerous pathological elements, useful for the establishment of therapeutic management. In dogs, the urinary sediment showed a predominance of blood cells (leukocyturia - 57.69%; hematuria - 46.15%), followed by microorganisms (26.92%). In cats, the urinary sediment showed mainly struvite crystals in 75.9% of cases. Calcium oxalate crystals more than five/ microscopic field with magnification 400 were correlated with ethylene glycol intoxication. The use of a protocol for the crystalluria study (including crystal type, crystal appearance, crystal number, minimum and maximum crystal size, aggregate number and minimum and maximum aggregate size) is an important part of establishing the aetiology and allowing detection of risk factors favouring lithogenesis. An egg of the parasite Capillaria plica was identified in urinary sediment from a bitch with chronic uropathy.
