The phonological analysis of sentence intonation leads to the concept of prosodic structure, organizing accent phrases, the minimal intonative units in several hierarchical levels. The successive regroupings of these accent phrases are determined by dependency relations “to the right", indicated by melodic contours placed on the stressed syllables ending each accent phrase. The grammar using these contours operates linearly along the temporal course of the sentence.
