- Abstract
The article focuses on the reconsideration of the distribution and population status of medicinal leeches under the new taxonomy which recognized four Western Palearctic species, including Hirudo verbena and H. troctina. It notes the three hypotheses that could explain the distribution of Hirudo species, including the impacts of anthropogenesis, ecology and history. It reveals that human impact is considered to be among the important predictions affecting the medicinal leech.
