A Browner Shade of Noir: Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit as Decolonial Noir.

- Abstract
In "A Browner Shade of Noir," I argue for a rereading of Luis Valdez's Zoot Suit as a noir text that reframes El Pachuco as a decolonial hardboiled detective figure who reveals how the corruption of Los Angeles institutions like the newspapers, the police, and the justice system are rooted in white supremacist settler colonial logics. Borrowing from Michelle Raheja's concept of "visual sovereignty," I conclude that Valdez uses the character of El Pachuco to counter Hollywood's narratives of Chicanas/os as violent or savage and, in doing so, provide a framework for a decolonial noir form.
