- Title
MAROON RESISTANCE AND SETTLEMENT ON DANISH ST. CROIX.
- Authors
Roopnarine, Lomarsh
- Abstract
In this article the author examines aspects of the resistance of the Maroons, slaves imported from Africa, against the Danish masters in the island of St. Croix. It is noted that more than 50,000 African slaves were brought to the Danish West Indies to work on sugar plantations during the three centuries of the slave trade. A number of topics are addressed including covert or concealed forms of resistance such as damaging machinery or injuring farm animals, or the more overt act of running away and becoming fugitives.
