- Abstract
Objective: to identify the individual factors associated with child mortality in the Northeast region of Brazil. Methods: Ecological study that used data from the Mortality Information Systems (SIM) and Life Birth Information Systems (SINASC). Bivariate analysis was performed through Chi-square of independence test Odds Ratio (OR). Results: There was a statistically significant association (p<0.001) between mother's age and birth weight and pregnancy length, as well as between cause of death and child's skin color. When the mother has 12 years or more of schooling, there is 2.34 (p<0.001) times more chances of the child dying when born by cesarean section. Deaths caused by disorders in the perinatal period were more frequent among brown children (63.3%), while congenital malformations predominated among white children (22.6%). Conclusion: Individual factors such as maternal education and skin color of the child are determinants of infant mortality in the Northeast of Brazil.
