- Title
The Equine Industry Employment Crisis: Exploring Opinions of Employment Practices within the Ontario Equine Industry.
- Authors
Sylvia, Eliza A.; Currie, Elliott
- Abstract
Illegal employment practices refer to the method in which employees are paid and how the positions they hold within an industry are affected by changes in governing laws and procedures. The present research investigated the idea that illegal employment practices within the equine industry in Ontario reduce job satisfaction and increase employee turnover levels. The authors further suggest that there is a perceived cost effectiveness in hiring and maintaining employees illegally, thus providing a motivation to continue this organizational practice. Survey sections one through four were provided to employers and employees that were members of the Ontario Equestrian Federation by way of an anonymous online survey. Results revealed that the employee participants had a stronger belief that illegal employment practices were regularly occurring within the industry; however, most participants did not perceive it to interfere with levels of job satisfaction or turnover rates. Implications of these results as well as the limitations and suggestions for future studies are discussed.
