- Abstract
In this study we present an update of our work concerning pedestrians who have been the victims of road accidents in the metropolitan census regions of Montreal and Toronto. From 1995 to 1997 the adjusted rates of mortality are not different in the two cites. However, the adjusted rates for morbidity are statistically different for men and for women. Accidents implicating women are higher in Toronto. For the peripheral areas (RMR-City Center) there is no difference between Toronto and Montreal with respect to mortality. There is one with respect to morbidity, which is higher in Montreal for men. Where mortality is concerned, one must be careful when comparing specific rates respecting sex and age because of the small number of cases available in the study. The rates of morbidity are higher for most of the age groups for each of the two sexes for the city center of Toronto; and for males 0–24 years and 75 and over for the peripheral area of Montreal. To explain these results, comparable variables were taken from police reports for the same period. The daily variations, schedules of serious road accidents involving pedestrians as well as lighting, speeding, condition of the roadway, weather, and the type of vehicle involved are significant for the city centers. These factors are also significant for the peripheral areas with the exception of the daily variations. To the extent possible, the authors compare these results with those obtained through studies in other countries.
