- Abstract
This article explains the developmental process and the level of efficiency first-graders from low sociocultural levels, who attend Mexican public schools, attain in their reading skills. An evaluation was made of 165 children during the 2004-2005 school year. Based on the results of the evaluation, the children's silent and oral reading skills were described, in addition to their reading comprehension, at different times during their first year of formal schooling. The analysis used the variables of age at enrollment and the number of years of preschool attendance. The implications of the results are discussed and proposals are presented that may favor the development of literacy in children from low sociocultural levels, taking into consideration the ideas of educational psychology and research in the field.
