- Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease in childhood. Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by ingestion of cereal gluten proteins, and usually presented by chronic inflammation of the small intestine leading to malabsorption of nutrients. Autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease occur more frequently in patients with CD than in general population. AD and CD are both T-cell mediated inflammatory diseases, and may share common pathogenic immune pathways. Regulatory T-cells which prevents the process of autoimmune diseases and immunopathologic responses has a role in the immunopathogenesis of both of these diseases. The studies and case reports that have demonstrated this mutual pathogenesis made us consider that patients with atopic dermatitis may have increased risk of having celiac disease. This report describes a 2,5- year-old child who presented with severe atopic dermatitis and growth retardation and diagnosed with celiac disease as comorbidity.
