- Abstract
Emilija Škarnulytė's installation, Æqualia, explores the meeting point of the Rio Solimões and the Rio Negro, two rivers in the Amazon that flow parallel to each other without immediately mixing due to their different sediment compositions. Škarnulytė, dressed as a mermaid, swims through the rivers and captures the journey on film. The installation represents the boundaries between reality and folklore, and serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all things. The encounter between Škarnulytė and the pink Amazon River dolphins adds a sense of wonder to the installation. However, the accompanying text reveals that the meeting point of the rivers ran dry due to a record-breaking drought, leading to the death of the dolphins. This highlights the urgent need for environmental action and the fragility of our planet's ecosystems.
