- Abstract
The article presents the results of a questionnaire survey among teachers of elementary schools in Slovakia. The aim of realized study was to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the status of environmental education as a cross-cutting theme in the educational process, as well as ways of its implementation. The research was carried out on 242 elementary schools; data were collected during the months January to March 2013. Questionnaires were processed quantitatively (calculation of the absolute and relative frequency) and qualitatively through content analysis. The results showed that the environmental education in elementary schools is often integrated into other subjects. As benefits for the position of environmental education as a cross-cutting theme in the educational process, respondents mainly include: 1. opportunity to choose the method of implementation of environmental education; 2. opportunity to combine formal education with non-formal education; 3. opportunity to participate in environmental projects; 4. easy organization of the teaching process. As disadvantages the respondents mainly considered: 1. lack of time for the implementation; 2. rivalry with other cross-cutting issues; 3. lack of educational literature; 4. formalism.
