- Abstract
Introduction Children get acquainted with the economic system from early ages in various ways, such as school experiences, television and other media, and experiences in the family, and they start to learn about this system (Bayhan, Yükselen & Kaysılı, 2007; Brophy & Alleman, 2002; Erden, Schug & Armento, 1985; Hansen, 1985, Webley; 2005, Wehmeyer, 1980). Children need to acquire basic knowledge about the economy from an early age with an appropriate content and approach so that they can understand and solve the economic issues they encounter in their daily lives (Erden, undated; Webley, 2005). People who think that a basic economic education is necessary for everyone is therefore generally agree that this education should be given as early as possible. The results of applied economics education studies conducted for different age groups of children revealed that children can understand economic phenomena and events and obtain permanent successes when appropriate methods and materials are used and when in-service training is given to teachers (Akhan, 2010; Davison & Kilgore, 1971; Kourilsky, 1977). Bayhan et al. (2007) have shown that children perceive economic concepts in terms of their age. But these studies often reflect the impact of school and formal education programs. However, the results of PISA 2015 show that out-of-school learning opportunities such as family experiences, direct experiences, having financial products and using them play an important role in the development of financial literacy (OECD, 2017). This status requires that the economics education for children should be considered in terms of nonschool processes and resources as much as formal school processes. Literature review reveals that the non-formal education studies related to economics education for children are very limited (Paduraru, 2013). In this context, the aim of this study is to examine the non-formal education studies on economics education for children in Turkey and the contribution of these studies to formal education. Method The study was conducted with the qualitative research approach. Firstly, the basic terms used in the field were searched on the web in order to determine the studies related to the topic. Then the educations carried out for children were determined within this scope. As a result of this search, it has been noticed that some institutions have repeated their educations on an annual basis. Since the contents of these educations are the same, these educations have been reviewed once. After this reviewing, seven education programs conducted by four different institutions were examined in the study. The data of the research is collected by the technique of document review and the information that the related institutions publish on the web sites is compiled. Descriptive qualitative analysis method was used to analyze the data. In this process, the education programs carried out have been examined in terms of "institution, type of program, duration, target group, purpose, content, methods and materials". Subsequently, the content was analyzed by comparing it with the learning outcomes of the Life Science and Social Studies programs. The results obtained are descriptively presented. Findings According to the results obtained in the research, the non-formal education studies on education of children are conducted by four institutions, an association and three private banks. Two of the programs are prepared in virtual environment by using simulations and the studies of other institutions are carried out as face-to-face education and/ or workshops. The target group of the studies is composed of primary and secondary school students grouped as 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades and 5th, 6th and 7th grade students. The common content of the programs for teaching economics to children is covered through concepts such as money, saving, demand, need, expenditure, budget, accumulation, investment, assistance, and bank. There are also programs which include some different concepts or issues. Programs are generally focused on saving and helping. Most of the programs have adopted active learning approach and tried to use games, animations, design studies, and simulations. However, it is understood that the verbal lecture method is mainly used in the two programs. It has been seen that the programs offered as non-formal education support teaching programs, in particular, about developing saving awareness, developing conscious consumer behavior and, promoting helping value. Conclusion This study examines the non-formal economics education programs carried out for children and contributes to the limited literature in this area. The study has shown that the basic contents of non-formal education programs constitute saving and conscious consumerism issues. Also programs support the formal school programs especially in terms of this main contents. Private banks have an important role on conducting these kind of programs. This status can be seen as the reflection of the international financial literacy movement leading by OECD. It is suggested that the production dimension should be added to this content or different programs focusing on production should be organized to reach more holistic economic sight. The research data was obtained by compiling the information announced on the web pages. For this reason, the study only reveals the results of the programs in terms of their goals. Different studies should be carried out to determine how these programs are implemented in practice and determine their results. In addition, it is necessary to carry out the studies to increase the prevalence of such studies in society.
