- Abstract
Background: Symptomatic gall stone disease is a common health problem not only in developed nations its incidence is increasing in developing countries, because of changing dietary habits. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considerd as gold standard method in its management. Objective: To determine the frequency and causes of conversion of laparoscopic cholecystectomy into open cholecystectomy. Subjects and methods: This descriptive crossectional study was conducted in surgical department of Medical and Teaching Institution (MTI) Lady Reading Hospital Peshwar from january2016 2016 to December 2017. 126 patients of symptomatic gallstones disease fulfilling the inclusion criteria were subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy and were followed throughout the procedure to see for any conversion and its cause. Results: A total of 126 patients underwent Laparoscopy Cholecystectomy (LC) during the study period. The mean age was 41.32years+ 13.40 SD and age range of 18---68 years. The total no of cases converted to open cholecystectomy (OC) were 12(9.52%). Conclusions: One disadvantage of LC is the conversion into open procedure. But conversion should not be considered as complication of the procedure rather it is a mature decision by the surgeons to avoid unnecessary lengthening of the duration of surgery once they encounter any difficulty or intraoperative complication.
