The article offers literary criticism on the 1962 novel "Pale Fire," by Vladimir Nabokov, and the 1791 biography "The Life of Johnson," by James Boswell about author Samuel Johnson. The author discusses anecdotes and conversation in the novel and biography. Other topics addressed include Johnson's Literary Club, author Sir Francis Bacon's works on conversation, and the narrator of "Pale Fire" Charles Kinbote.
