- Abstract
The National Library of Estonia in Tallinn hosted the first major international conference on digital preservation, "Aligning National Approaches to Digital Preservation" (May 23-25, 2011). Here it has been provided a forum in which national preservation programs shared their experiences and started to build strategic international collaborations to support the preservation of our collective cultural memory. With a mixture of North-American and European approaches, the conference explored how digital preservation programs would create and sustain initiatives regarding tackling issues of the most important areas: technical, organizational, standards, legal, educational and economical. The diversity of panelists and keynote speakers illustrated that digital preservation started to be of great concern among professionals all over the world and the conference itself was considered to be placed right in time. Though the participants concluded that we cannot speak of an "alignment" at this very moment, issues like educating future professionals, general public awareness, government understanding and support were found to be the next steps to be taken concerning digital preservation.
