- Authors
Pratt, Rod
- Abstract
The article discusses the British Army presence in Brisbane Town, Queensland, during its time as a convict settlement in the 19th century. The author explains the use of army regiments as convict escorts and jailers, and notes that work in the Australian Colonies during the convict era was seen as demoralizing, which led to desertions. The use of whippings for soldier discipline is detailed, as are British Army enlistment practices. Regiments discussed include the 57th, 17th, and 4th.
