- Title
Constable's Englishness.
- Authors
Vaughan, William
- Abstract
The article examines some of the paintings by John Constable to explore a relationship between his art and Englishness. The author believes that the dramatic effects of the English Landscape and the necessary dependence upon design rather than color in the monochrome plates drew attention to the mannerisms evident in the work of Constable. He also discusses the use of the book "History of the Anglo Saxons," by Sharon Turner, as the sole source of Constable's ideas on British history. In addition, the author finds that Constable seems to be attempting to counter the image of England that had been made out of some of his own earlier work.
