- Abstract
The article focuses on the origins of universal design with particular focus on the work of American designers Thomas Lamb, Marc Harrison, and Richard Hollerith. The author examines the papers that each of these designers wrote in regard to barrier-free design and user accessibility, which are included in the archives of the Hagley Museum and Library in Wilmington, Delaware. She discusses the research Lamb conducted on human physiology and the hand, the consumer products Harrison developed for Cuisinart and the house he designed with the International Lead Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO), and how Hollerith focused on human factors in his industrial design work.
