The article analyzes the depiction of Romantic historicism and the role of art and architecture as historical evidence in the performance of cultural nationalism in "España artística y monumental," a French publication by Genaro Péerez Villaamil and Patricio de la Escosura. Topics discussed include portrayal of national Catholic identity for a transnational audience, history of Spanish architecture and Spanish civilization, and Péerez Villaamil as painter-historian.
