- Abstract
Static and dynamic friction coefficient investigation of grinded segment joints With the fast development of wind energy, the designs of Wind Turbine Towers have been continuously improved, moreover new structures have been innovated. As one of the innovations, segment tower structure was developed. Due to its prefabrication and segmental construction characteristic, it suits particularly well for tower structures. The resulting segment joints which have already been extensively studied in bridge construction are of great importance. As a major difference to bridge segment construction, the joints are designed as grinded dry joints instead of shear key connected joints. With external prestressing technology, the joints are under compression and thus the forces will be transmitted through friction. Previous studies of such "very smooth" joints have typically been carried out on specimen with smooth surface rather than grinded surface. Therefore, to what extent the current standards values will fit the design of the grinded segment joints is questionable. Furthermore, the wind turbine towers are highly dynamically stressed structures. It should also be clarified whether the static friction coefficient is also applicable for dynamic load situation or not. The results of static as well as dynamic tests are evaluated and discussed.
