- Abstract
In the book "Winner and Waster and Its Contexts" by W. Mark Ormrod, the poem "Winner and Waster" is examined, which is only preserved in a manuscript from the 15th century. The poem deals with the relationship between traditional courtly behavior and rational ruler action in 14th century England. It discusses the question of how to deal with the gains of war and critically reflects on the proper courtly behavior. The poem offers interesting insights into the proximity to the court and the discussions about the role of the ruler.
