- Abstract
The design of leadership learning programs is enhanced when effort is put into establishing what individuals know and do not yet know about their leadership competencies. This article reports on two trials of a particular leadership learning process. The trials were undertaken in Australia and New Zealand, using the Competence Profile School Management (CPSM) leadership self-assessment tool, originally developed in Europe. The potential of this online psychometric tool is explored as a starting point for determining one's own leadership learning needs. The tool is designed for use within existing leadership learning programs to be followed by coaching. Participants completing the online tool received personalised feedback reports on their current competencies. This information, when followed by individualised coaching, supports ongoing reflection and skill development for those learning to lead. Interview data from emerging and new leaders and their experienced-leader coaches establish the extent to which this tool is regarded as a useful component of leadership learning programs.
