- Abstract
Aim: This study aims to compare the conventional method and paper hole method for counting reticulocytes. Introduction: Reticulocytes are the immature cells formed during erythropoiesis. It can be seen in the peripheral blood. It appears slightly larger than a mature erythrocyte and has remnants of RNA within the cell. Reticulocyte count helps to analyze the specific cause of anemia. Materials and Methods: The blood samples were collected from the clinical laboratory of Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences. The counting of the reticulocytes was performed using two methods, conventional and paper hole method in the Department of Pathology at Saveetha Dental College. The data were collected and tabulated. Results: The results revealed that the paper hole method of counting the reticulocytes is more efficient as it takes lesser time to count the cells. Conclusion: The results from the present study show that the paper hole method can be used on cases where time is a major factor. The paper hole method is more efficient compared to the conventional method when time is a factor.
