- Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major and most emerging health problem which can be described as a state of raised glucose level in blood. Such complex metabolic disorder is mainly resulting from either insufficiency of insulin or dysfunction of the same hormone. The prevalence of diabetes is shown in throughout the world and especially in third world countries. At present, there are several drugs, mainly allopathic drugs are available for the treatment of diabetes, but they are all expensive and also possess side effects. For the last one decade, a lot of new drugs and treatments have been developed based on a better understanding of their mechanisms of action against the disease. In spite of their advanced way of action against the disease, none of these drugs or treatments can alone or in combination can properly control the insulin release and prevent the complications normally generated from the disease. Even they are associated with short- and long-run adverse effects. Nature is considered as the best source of medicines. There are several medicinal herbs have been tried for indigenous remedies and treatment of diabetes. Among that Swertia chirata is considered as the most effective plant and having all medicinal properties including antihelminthic, antipyretic, hypoglycemic, and antifungal property. The plant extract is highly effective to increase the insulin output from the pancreas and can inhibit intestinal absorption of glucose. Several studies have been conducted to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of the plat in the form of different extracts. However, lot more studies are still required to fully understand its mechanism against hyperglycemia and to cure the disease fully.
