- Title
Fritz Lang Outfoxed : The German Genius as Contract Employee.
- Authors
Smedley, Nick
- Abstract
Fritz Lang's participation in the films THE RETURN OF FRANK JAMES, WESTERN UNION, and MAN HUNT, all made for Twentieth Century-Fox between 1939 and 1941, is documented through extensive examination of primary resources. The limited nature of Lang's contribution to their planning and development is used to explain the atypical status of the films within his larger body of work. The existence of much newly available documentary evidence must inform any future efforts by critics or theorists to analyze the work of Lang or, indeed, any other workers within the Hollywood studio system.
