"RUIN OR LANDMARK"? BLACK BODIES AS LIEUX DE MÉMOIRE IN THE SOUND AND THE FURY.
- Authors
Dobbs, Cynthia
- Abstract
The article focuses on how author William Faulkner uses race, trauma, memory, history and narrative in his book "The Sound and the Fury." The theory of "lieux de mémore" or the desire to memorialize, by French historian Pierre Nora is explored. In Faulkner's novel the memorialization of African Americans as a body is analyzed. The voice of the character Quentin reveals a misperception of black characters by white characters in the novel. Details are given for the voiceless character Caddy.
