Historical background.
- Abstract
The article presents a historical background on the study of the geology of East Greenland. Earlier studies of igneous rocks in the East Greenland, part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province, dealt with rocks north of Scoresby Sund. Knowledge greatly expanded due to major expeditions under the Danish Lithosphere Centre, and to studies made by L. R. Wager and W. A. Deer on the Skaergaard intrusion. Also discussed is the mantle plume hypothesis explaining the present day features of the area.
