- Abstract
This document is a letter published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. The letter discusses the impact of emotionally salient and loaded words on the choice of intensity of care in shared decision-making between patients and physicians. The study used randomized case vignettes to investigate the influence of loaded words on participants' decisions about high or low intensity of care. The findings showed that the presence of loaded words had a substantial impact on decision outcomes, with participants more likely to choose lower intensity of care when loaded words were present. The study suggests that words used in healthcare communication can significantly influence patients' and caregivers' decision-making.
