- Abstract
Experiences with the application of the needle penetrometer test in marlstone The correct assessment of Unconfined Compressive Strength represents one of the core tasks in the context of the planning and execution of civil engineering, tunneling and geotechnical engineering works. However, in weak and non‐durable rock types, sampling, preservation of the natural water content, sample preparation and finally testing with standard laboratory testing methods, such as the Uniaxial Compressive Strength test, is challenging, if not impossible. As early as 1980, the needle penetrometer was developed in Japan as a field test method for estimating the Unconfined Compressive Strength of such rocks. Although the procedure is presented in an ISRM Suggested Method published in 2014, the use of the needle penetrometer and the needle penetrometer index (NPI) is rather unusual in Germany and Central Europe. The paper resumes the results of a large number of tests carried out in the course the geotechnical investigation of pile drilling works in marlstones of the Upper Cretaceous in the vicinity of Münster/Germany. Based on this experience, the article presents an analysis of the potential area of application and comments on the correlation of testing results and Unconfined Compressive Strength.
